The Penland Barrel Racing News!
News For 2008!
August 16-17, 2008 found us at the Crooked Creek Horse Park located in Ford City, Pennsylvania. Mason and his horse, Jolena Rey Smooth, better known as Jory, won first place in the 2008 Bob Buchleitner Memorial Youth Series. This series was an average of 4 races.
*****
August 9 - 10, 2008 found us at Wild Horse Hollow in Negley, Ohio. Beth ended up tied for 4th in the Masters Class with Whirling Fastcat on Saturday. Also on Saturday, Mason ended up 3rd with Jory and 5th with Sara in the Youth 1D. On Sunday, Sara and Mason finished up 3rd in the third division of the Open 4D race.
*****
August 2, 2008 found us at Porchview Arena in Acme, PA for the PA IBRA State Finals. Beth won the Master's 2D Championship at the PA IBRA Finals with Whirling Fastcat and they also placed in the 2D of the IBRA Open 4D Race. Mason had stellar runs with both of his horse. He ended up 5th in the Shootout with Jory and had a SMOKING run with Sara in the IBRA Open race which landed that team in the first division.
*****
Mason won the youth race with Jory at the IBRA show held at the Cowboy Corral, July 26, 2008. Then two nice runs in the Open 1D had Mason finishing up in second place with Jory and Beth with Whirling Fastcat in third place over-all.
*****
Mason received a TOP 5 AWARD in the YOUTH 1D at the Tri-State Classic, Sunday, July 13, 2008 with his young horse, Sara. Sara is the colt Mason has been working really hard with these past couple of months. We are seeing real progress and potential in this mare.
The Tri-State Classic had some bad luck with the "weather gods" this weekend. Saturday evening saw a severe storm blow through with a TON of rain. So that made for some interesting runs on Sunday. Our other horses really did not like to run in the mud. From now on we will be scratching them from the class if the ground looks this muddy.
Mason and I really enjoyed this show though. It was just the two of us camping. We had fun visiting with friends and doing some relaxing in the great outdoors with our horses. A nice break from our "at home" routine!
*****
We have been having a great month of barrel racing this month of June. We just
spent this past weekend of June 21-22 at the Crooked Creek Horse Park where Mason and Beth had some very successful runs. Mason pulled 3 checks out of 4 runs with Jory. All three of our barrel horses are making a smooth transition from the indoor pens of winter to the the outdoor pens for the summer.
I posted some pictures here from our weekend.
*****
Saturday, May 31st, found us at Buckhorn Ranch Arena. Mason and Jolena Rey Smooth had a good run, placing 6th place in the Open 1D. We are now looking forward to the outside shows starting up now.
Don't forget that we are having Open Arena Nights in our outdoor arena on Tuesday/Thursday throughout the summer months. Check out our calendar page. 5:00 P.M. - 9:00 P.M. $10/horse. Call or email.

This past weekend found us once again at Wild Horse Hollow for the NBHA show. Saturday, Beth finished 8th over-all in the warm-up 4D class. In the NBHA 4D she ended up first place in the 3rd division with a great run from Fastcat.
That day also found Kent volunteering for setting the third barrel for hours so that Beth didn't have to do that job. XOXOXO to Kent!
On Sunday, May 25th, Mason pulled 2 checks in the NBHA Youth class second division winning first and third place with his two horses. Beth pulled a check in the Warm-Up Class with Fastcat and had an awesome run, finishing up in the second division in the NBHA Open 4D class.
It was a beautiful weekend to be camping. A huge difference from the rainy and cold weekend that we had at the last show! Now, we are really looking forward to getting to some shows with some big outdoor arenas.
*****
Saturday, April 26, we spent the day barrel racing at Wild Horse Hollow. Beth and Whirling Fastcat had a great run in the Open 4D Class with a money-winning run. You can click here to see this run on our Fun Stuff Page.

Today, April 12th was our first show of the 2008 season. The barrel race was held at the Buckhorn Ranch Arena in West Sunbury, Pennsylvania. We finally came out of hibernating in our "den" and got out to a show! We are not a fan of barrel racing in freezing weather and snow! Congratulations to Mason for winning 2nd place in the 2D of the Youth class at Buckhorn Ranch Arena with his colt Sara. This was only Sara's second show. He also had a good run in the Junior Horse class. Beth and Fastcat placed 7th over all in the Masters class with a really nice run. The weather was a chilly 40 something degrees but it was a great day and a great start for our 2008 race season!
You can see videos of our races here from yesterday's show by clicking on this link!

Congratulations to Mason on being a NBHA 2008 World Qualifier. He qualified for the NBHA World Championships by winning the Reserve Champion in the Open 1D for NBHA- Ohio, District 8. Good job to you Mason, that took hard work and dedication! The race is held in Augusta, GA in October.

News For 2007!

Mason has been playing basketball this winter season. I can say with complete honesty that I am sooooooo glad to have the excuse to not be showing during these cold months! lol We plan on riding this weekend though when the temperature gets above 50 degrees. :-)
*****
We are excited to announce that Kay Blandford, the Women's Professional Rodeo Champion 2007, will be racing Jory for us this winter in Texas. You can check out Kay's website here! Look for updates about Jory's winter in Texas here. Mason is playing basketball and we are enjoying taking the winter off from barrel-racing. We are still riding here at the farm though! Come ride with us if you want! Just call!

|
Mason and I attended the Kay Blandford clinic held at Jewel Farms, November 23- 25, 2007 in Centerburg, Ohio. This is a new arena and the facility was really nice. Kay was so down-to-earth and the concepts she was teaching were very easy to understand. I posted a couple of pictures from the clinic on the Fun Stuff page too. If anyone from my area is interested in attending a clinic with Kay please email me. I would love to have her put on a clinic in our area.

We just got home from the WBR at Pelzer, South Carolina, Sept. 14-16, 2007. What a great trip. My horse, Whirling Fastcat and I won the Adult 3D Incentive. Fastcat ran so consistent all weekend and just made me so proud of her. She ran 1 second off all weekend against some of the top horses in the country.
The WBR shows are so well organized. Sixty-six horses an hour really gets a barrel racer spoiled!
|
Mr. Bobby Barter was having a bit of fun with me at this show. I will have to post more about that on the Fun Page here. It was another great trip and I am so blessed to have made such great friends from that region of the country. We really love the WBR shows and hope to make it to many more in the future.

|
We were at a NBHA show on Saturday 8/18/2007. It was a good-sized turnout with $1100 added money and 130+ entries and we had all good runs. We went home very happy with the way the day went.

|
We have so much fun barrel racing. There are few sports where the entire family can get so involved, and nobody sits on a bench. Today, on the way home from Crooked Creek Horse Park, we were all talking about how fortunate our family is to get to spend so much time bonding as a family and having fun together. We sure are making some great memories!
|
We headed up to Crooked Creek just in time for the rain to start pouring. We allowed Mason to run two horses in the youth class and then headed right home. We all got soaked but it was fun. We still had our smiles! LOL
*****
|
The World Barrel Racing Show held at the Circle G Arena in Lewisburg, Ohio was an absolute BLAST! Mason won the second division of the Youth 4D Incentive and had awesome and clean runs all weekend. Jory and him are really getting it together. I believe this show will be returning in 2008 to this region and I would recommend this show experience to any barrel racer.

|
At the Ohio IBRA State Finals (7/27-29/2007), while we were warming up our horses to run, there was a serious alley-way accident on Saturday night that injured a couple of people. A lady had to be life-flighted from the show grounds. Our thoughts and prayers are with them and all of their family members. We are praying for the complete healing of all of the injuries.
*****
|
Friday at the Tri State Classic (7/13/2007), Mason got 2nd with Fastcat in the youth and pulled a check in the 1D with his horse in the Open 4D. But that was the end of our luck! I had good runs with my horse... I caught a 2nd barrel once when leaving it... I have no idea how it went down.. apparently I thought I was clear and started kicking for the third just a hair to soon. :-( The other runs were good but no money.
|
I DID stay up till 3 on Friday... Talking and laughing with a bunch of people. It has been a LONG time since I have done that at a barrel race. I probably won't be doing that for a while... cause I kind of paid for it all weekend... LOL I haven't laughed so hard in a long time though.. and I am still laughing today at how much fun the whole weekend was.

On Sunday, (7/8/2007) at the Van Pelt Arena, Mason and Jolena Rey Smooth won the Open 4D class and Beth and Whirling Fastcat took 2nd place right behind Mason!! Fastcat is really learning where her feet are and figuring out how to run! Mason and Jory also placed 4th in the Youth race.
Whirling Fastcat and Beth won the 2nd division of the Open 2D class, on Saturday, at the Van Pelt Arena (7/7/2007) in Greenville, PA. Mason also placed on Fastcat in the Youth race.

This weekend's show was the 2007 Ohio NBHA State Show held at Roberts Arena in Wilmington, Ohio. Mason and Jory had a good run in the Open class On Friday (6/29/2007) and even with a bad slip on the third barrel, they still finished up in 17th place out of 332 riders. Whirling Fastcat STUNNED our entire family in the Youth class on Saturday (6/30/2007) by really coming on strong. Mason and Fastcat ended up in 9th place in the youth out of 130 youth riders. Fastcat and Beth ran high 2D times all weekend in the Open 4D Class. WE WERE SO EXCITED! Whirling Fastcat is really showing us a desire to run barrels and was consistent all weekend.
*****
|
The show on Saturday, June 16, 2007 was a HUGE NBHA show located at Circle T in Shelby, Ohio. There were over 200 entries in the big open class. Mason had a great run with Jory and ended up just out of the money in the 1st Division of the Open. In the youth he ran our horse Whirling Fastcat and made money on her. Fastcat is a really fun horse to ride... very quiet, quick and athletic... and comes home with a complete set of brakes... my kind of horse! LMBO

I also ended up in 3rd place in the third division in the Open NBHA Class with Fastcat. It was gorgeous weather, an easy drive, and a whole lot of fun!

The in Speedhorse Bonanza, held in Lexington VA, June 1-3, 2007, was lucky again for both Beth and Mason. Mason and Beth both pulled a check in the NBHA OPEN on Saturday and Mason grabbed another check during the NBHA YOUTH race. As usual, it is always nice to see familiar faces from the other states. It is great to get to visit with friends who live long distances from us but just a few horse trailers down when we are all at a show together!

Kent took his mom, Mariah, Marisa, and Mason out to the Circle T Arena yesterday, May 19, 2007. I took myself over 2 hours north in the other direction for a baby shower for my niece. Mason took our colt Cat and his horse Jory. Mr. Two Treys has been getting time off to get him ready for the Speed Horse Bonanza.
Cat was running in top of the 3D with all clean runs and looks like she will be running 2D times very soon. We love how she is "wrapping" the barrels. Mason is doing a terrific job getting her trained on the barrels.
Mason and Jory ended up pulling a check and placing 6th in the 1st division out of a 156 riders in the NBHA Open 4D. This was a huge show with a lot of TOUGH competition!
*****
|
